True Survivor Mode
Quoted from reH:
Quote:
For most, the problem with RE4 is the one dimensional story. For me, the story is certainly a problem, but the bigger concern is the gameplay. Its purely action based, and there is no aspect of Survival whatsoever. Luckily, there is a way to play RE4 which brings back that essence of Survival Horror to this otherwise dull, shoot-em-up action sequence.
Step #1: Forget the Merchant. Seriously, just ignore him altogether. Pretend he isnt there. Dont buy any weapons or upgrades at all. Rely only upon weapons and supplies that can be picked up in the field.
Step #2: Well...there is no step two. Its as simple as that. Hard to believe? Perhaps. But this one drastic maneuver will make you change the way you look at Resident Evil 4, as a game.
First of all, this limits your fire power. Since you wont have the massive selection of weaponry, youll have rely upon standard equipment. This includes:
- Survival Knife (default)
- Standard Handgun x1 (default)
- Pump Action Shotgun x1 (found in village)
- Broken Butterfly x1 (found in castle)
- Rocket Launcher x1 (found in castle)
- Grenades (frag., incendiary, flash bang) xUnlimited
Secondly, you wont be purchasing the Tactical Vest, so youll be receiving damage at full cost.
Thirdly, you wont be upgrading the size of your attache case, so youre item space will be severely limited.
With so little firepower, and such limited space for ammunition and healing items, youll find the challenge the game presents to be much greater. But I assure you, it is entirely possible to complete the game under these circumstances. In fact, though the difference is very noticeable, its not enough to make the game "frustrating".
Your greatest obstacle when choosing this mode of play, will be the Regenerators. The parasites planted within their bodies will tempt you to purchase a sniper rifle. But its not necessary. There are only two times in the game where you are forced to engage them. One is the Iron Maiden which is holding a key card. The other is the Regenerator in the Low Temperature room which must be defeated to unlock the door. But I assure you, these creatures can be killed without the sniper rifle/scope. In fact, they can be destroyed with your Survival Knife.
Since your item space will drastically limit that amount of ammunition you can carry, youll will need to avoid combat much more than usual. This will greatly intensify the situation, as you are forced to solve puzzles, and progress while being pursued, and choosing your shots.
Hopefully this will shed new light on this stale game. Anyone who decides to try it out, let me know what you think.
