Default Resident Evil: Bore

I realize that there have been plenty of discussions bashing Resident Evil 4, but please bare with me, and dont close this thread. I was recently flipping through my new Game Informer Magazine, when I stumbled across a readers letter under a section entitled, "The Readers Strike Back". Heres the letter:

Quote:
I have noticed that while video games are becoming increasingly appealing to the senses, it also seems that they are also becoming more linear and full of mindless action. For example, Resident Evil 4 was just that - a boring mistake of an action game. It took everything that made the Resident Evil series great (non-linear, adventure-based gameplay) and threw it in the trash. To my dismay, reviewers (including yourselves) rejoiced! Now I hear that Resident Evil 5 will adhere to this horrible new game structure. Am I destined to watch all my favorite games turn into mindless shooters? Is the golden age of games over, only to be replaced by beautiful-but-empty games designed to cater to gamers who demand nothing more than zombies sporting rocket launchers? - Max Otworth
When I read Max's letter, mist filled my eyes. This writer expressed perfectly what I believe the majority of Resident Evils fanbase do feel about the direction of the series. He further expressed my own feelings when he condemned game reviewers for praising this generic, dumbed down, system that completely shits all over the majesty of what once made Resident Evil such a great franchise.

As expected, GI retaliated to this disgruntled fan in typical fashion. Heres the response:

Quote:
We hate to break it to you, but youll have a hard time rallying gamers against Resident Evil 4, one of the best games of the last generation. We all have attachments to certain franchises, and it can be tough to see them change and evolve, but its better than seeing outdated gameplay recycled time and time again. As for the charge of all games becoming focused on "mindless action", thats just plain false. Contrary to the claims that that first-person-shooters are the only games on the market, we are currently enjoying a time when there are more types of games for more types of gamers than ever before.; thankfully, your perceived decline of one series is not representative of the industry as a whole.
Oh dear. As you can all see, GI obviously has no idea what it is that makes these games great. And not only that, but they totally dodged the writers point, and tried to make him sound like he was bashing the entire gaming industry. How pathetic.

They argue that there are more diverse games being produced than ever before. Well that may very well be the case, but if it is, why not focus on simply creating these now types of games, and letting the classics hang on to their integrity? Evolution is a must, but Resident Evil 4 is NOT and evolution for the series. Sure its prettier to look at, but the gameplay is disgustingly simple, and just plain empty. They couldve easily taken the Resident Evil formula, which was wonderful, upgraded graphics, and AI, and more importantly, utilized the capabilities of next-gen hardware, and created a game that would make everyone cream their jeans. When you consider the depth that Resident Evil once offered, in gameplay, as well as plot, I find it ridiculous that anyone cant call this piece of trash an evolution.

I dont know about the rest of you, but Im with Max on this one, 100%. And I strongly encourage all of you to barrage the mailbox's of Game Informer Magazine, and let them know that Max would not be hard pressed to rally gamers against RE4.

I agree. I won't close the thread, because debate about RE4 is part of what keeps RE forums going. XD

I think RE4 is a poor game in terms of story. I like the gameplay, very enjoyable, but overall, it's just a very poor game compared to the quality of games we're used to getting in the RE4 franchise. God knows where that second guy is looking, because 80% of the RE fanbase hates RE4. I'm not even paying attention to that, because it's obvious he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Yeah, like I said in another post I do love RE4, but not for the same reasons I loved the originals. I really like the new gameplay set up, and I don't mind that there's intelligent(kindof) enemies as it does make sense for Umbrella to search for a new type of human bioweapon besides the mindless zombies of old. But really without the puzzles and exploration it's just not right. I said it once and I'll say it again, RE4 should have been the side story, and RE:CV should have been the true 4.

bottom line is , RE4 marks the beggining of the end for a franchise that was once great , but has fallen its grace in favor for "OMG SHOOT IT SHOOT IT MORE HAR HAR HAR" peeps.

"Once again you've stepped into the world of survival horror." ; If only CAPCOM realised the irony in all of this...

at least DEAD SPACE is creepy , i mostly found myself yawning throughout RE4...
